About the Animal Behaviour and Training Council

The Animal Behaviour and Training Council developed out of a working party co-ordinated by VETNET LLN, formed in response to the invitation from the Companion Animal Welfare Council (CAWC) to respond to its recommendations for the self-regulation of the dog training and behaviour therapy sector.

See CAWC, 2008. The Regulation of Companion Animal Services in Relation to Training and Behaviour Modification of Dogs.

The Council followed CAWC's lead and initially focused on dog trainers and animal behaviour therapists, before expanding to include trainers of other species, bringing together the major professional organisations in the veterinary, re-homing, behaviour therapy, and animal training sectors of the industry.

The Founding Members of the Council have worked together throughout 2010, sharing knowledge and expertise across the species gaps, to agree the standards of education and training required for animal trainers and behaviour therapists working in the UK.
