Information for Education Providers - The ABTC

Currently there is a wide spectrum of educational programmes available relating to animal behaviour and training that ranges from unaccredited courses delivered by unqualified individuals to formally taught degrees. Members of the public wishing to qualify themselves to work in this sector are met with a confusing array of possible choices and conflicting advice regarding the most suitable way to achieve their goals.

The ABTC is working to rationalise this situation. A lengthy consultation with its member organisations is generating a comprehensive, yet concise set of academic and practical requirements that learning providers will need to deliver at a level that is appropriate to the identified role. This information is being used in conjunction with Lantra (the Sector Skills Council) to create National Occupational Standards which in turn will form the basis of official careers advice.

There will be core knowledge and skill sets associated with the core roles with additional requirements for those wishing to carry out specialist work.
